Hello again! Sorry for the delay — I had to take three weeks off to trim my bangs.
But truly, thanks to everyone who came out to Baltimore Comic Con to say hi. Above is a photo of me with Matt L., a Pop Candy fan who said he used to print out my blog while he was stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan and that it made him feel a little closer to home. I’m so grateful for having made connections like these, and stories like that inspire me to keep making stuff!
Back in NYC, I saw my friend Jill Sobule’s musical, F*ck 7th Grade. It’s a fun, wild ride through Jill’s ‘70s childhood up until she scores a hit with “I Kissed A Girl.” I took my daughter, and we had a grand time. If you’re around, she’s performing it through Nov. 19. Congrats, Jill!
I also read what might be my favorite graphic novel of the year, Ducks by Kate Beaton. This epic memoir tells the story of when Kate worked in the Canadian oil sands to pay off her student loans. Equal parts fascinating, funny and devastating, I can’t stop thinking about it.
You can now rent Loving Highsmith, the new documentary about writer Patricia Highsmith. I’ve been on a Highsmith binge that includes this film, the graphic novel Flung Out of Space and her gargantuan diaries. The doc features interviews with her family and former friends/romantic partners, including 95-year-old writer Marijane Meaker.
I saw Soccer Mommy this week, and the room was thick with adoration. (Thanks for taking me, Will!) I love how she’s bringing back that alt-’90s dreamy guitar:
And hey, I’m throwing a party/screening on Nov. 20 for DENNY BARRACUDA. Come see the movie (as well as three more short films from Dean Haspiel and I). We’ll make memories.
Here’s a fresh diary comic — you can see them all on Patreon:
Finally, I just heard that Kevin Conroy died. I had the pleasure of speaking with Kevin a few times during my Pop Candy days, and he was always the kindest, most generous soul. Here’s a photo of us at a Batman event I moderated in 2014:
Have a beautiful weekend, everyone. See you soon.
love
