Before I kickstart a wild weekend of sweaty laundry and fretting about the future, I wanted to send you a fast update and a few diary comics.
As you may know, I’ve been drawing one daily diary comic each day since 2021. I’m tentatively planning to end this practice on Dec. 31, 2525, after five years (or 1,825 comics).
Paid Substack subscribers receive access to all diary comics. Thanks to everyone who supports my work here as a paid subscriber — it truly helps! Next week I’ll be sending a ton of comics via paid subscriptions, so if you like what you see, I urge you to climb aboard.
In other news, this week I visited the main building of the New York Public Library for the first time. They have an exhibit from their archives that includes stuff like this Studio 54 sign made by Andy Warhol that he gifted to Truman Capote:
And Charles Dickens’ writing desk, lamp and chair:
Also this week, my kid and I watched GIRLS STATE (Apple TV+), a fun documentary about the mock government program for teens that has existed for almost a century. Honesty, Girls State seemed old-fashioned when I was in high school, and to see it still maintains a dress code and receives less funding than Boys State may motivate today’s young women more than the actual program. The film is a follow-up to 2020’s BOYS STATE and might rile up your tweens ‘n’ teens in a good way.
For years one of my favorite podcasts, WHO CHARTED?, has introduced me to music in all genres. This week host/comedian Howard Kremer played a song by Paul Cauthen that I can’t get outta my mind. Cauthen is a modern-day country outlaw who mixes the old, new, borrowed and blue to delirious effect:
The New York Times polled hundreds of esteemed writers to come up with its new list of the top 100 books of the 21st century. It has a built-in tool so you can keep track of what you’ve read and what you wanna.
The Indigo Girls doc, IT’S ONLY LIFE AFTER ALL, is now streaming on Netflix. If you’re a fan from way back yonder, you’ll love it.
And Dean Haspiel’s latest comic, a “meta-heroic speculative memoir,” is now on sale. It may or may not contain a scrappy reporter named Winona Richards who somewhat resembles yours truly.
Enjoy the diary comics below, and enjoy your weekend even more!
