Are you surviving the apocalyptic air and seasonal bloat? Have you chosen a secret summer crush? I’m typing through a haze of insomnia and unexpected longing for shrimp and grits; shuteye and crustaceans are hard to come by in this city.
But wait, a photo:
DENNY BARRACUDA screens tomorrow (June 10) at the NYC Independent Film Festival! This will likely be our last festival screening, so of course I’ll be there draped in jewels. Tickets are available here. (You can also stream it.)
More good news: CONTINUITY ERRORS, the 2022 film I wrote and directed, is screening at AwesomeCon in Washington, D.C. on June 17! I’m mighty proud of Sharief Johnson, who has been nominated for Best Actor for his performance. (You can also stream this one, but I will virtually pummel you if you watch it on a phone.)
Notes and nodules:
TV IS OVER: I loved the limp-handed Succession finale and the starry Dave season-ender, but my passion for Somebody Somewhere cannot be overstated. Bridget Everett and Jeff Hiller are prom royalty, and to see a show where folks are just LIVING and not hurtling themselves through zombie-riddled hellscapes makes me raise a bottle and relax my stomach muscles. The second season was perfect; it’s the only show with characters I wanna cook breakfast for.
YOU HURT MY FEELINGS: I dug Nicole Holofcener’s new movie about a writer (Julia Louis Dreyfus) who overhears her husband (Tobias Menzies) dissing her new book. It’s a small and huge topic: I know some writers/artists who rarely or never show their work to their partners for this very reason, and I know others who depend on them for critiques and advice. It’s a shame we can’t make a living by just cramming our work into a fake rock and burying it behind a Dairy Queen.
THE BEST SHOW: If you had Tom Scharpling on your bingo card, then you got me — but I loved his recent episode about the 50 Greatest/Worst Movies with Jake Fogelnest and Molly Lambert debating the merits of Clifford (one of the greats) and Deadpool 3 (nope), which hasn’t even finished filming.
DESK SET: Sixty-six years after this Hepburn-Tracy movie was released, we’re still being replaced by machines! See it again or, like me, for the first time.
GOING FUR GOLD: My kid and I are into this Disney+ series about the weird world of animal competitions. Unlike so many other shows, this one is blissfully free of curse words, violence and straight men.
I still make diary comics and post them on Patreon. See them all for two bucks.
Happy belated birthday, Dad! He got a new helmet.
Keep in mind this photo was taken before the polluted air zapped my eyebrows and imprinted a plaid pattern on my skin.
Well, I better stop now or I’ll go blind. ‘Til next time …

Congratulations on the NYC Independent film fest! 💥
I loved season 2 of Somebody Somewhere even more than Season 1. I started watching solely from your recommendation. Thanks Whitney!
Clifford is my #1 favorite guilty pleasure movie. (Freejack is #2)
