I like to kick and stretch and kick!
Ahoy, friends and lovers! It's a busy life, but I do try to get out and pose in front of brick walls every now and then.
Last weekend I binged THE ANDY WARHOL DIARIES, Netflix's six-hour docuseries inspired by Warhol's posthumously published diary entries. It's the first doc that really explores his romantic life, particularly his relationships with Jed Johnson and Jon Gould. And while I was cautiously optimistic about the A.I. narration, it works perfectly with the material. (Semi-related: Here's a clip of Diana Ross performing in the rain in Central Park in 1983. Warhol was in the audience that day with his newest celebrity friend, up-and-coming actor Rob Lowe.)Â Â
I also saw THE BATMAN and enjoyed it, though emo-Pattinson isn't necessarily *my* Batman in the way, say, Matt Smith isn't *my* Doctor. (That title belongs to David Tennant, of course.) TURNING RED is a perfect movie for mothers to watch with their daughters. This weekend I wanna see THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD (now streaming via Amazon, etc.) and DRIVE MY CAR (via HBO Max).
TV-wise, I got through SQUID GAME and loved it. The 1883 finale was perfection. I thought the KILLING EVE season premiere was a little silly, but I'll stick with it. Curious about MINX and the upcoming Vanessa Bayer/Molly Shannon series I LOVE THAT FOR YOU.
I watched Guided by Voices perform a 55-song set (!), including "Teenage FBI"Â and "Cut-Out Witch."Â Special thanks to the dude who complimented my dance moves.
DEAD EYES *finally* snagged superstar guest Tom Hanks, who has eased into the role of America's Grandpa quite nicely.
Congrats to Jake at Alabama Booksmith--one of my favorite bookstores--for being featured on GOOD MORNING AMERICA.
Our longtime pal Gorman Bechard has a new documentary out about former Wilco musician Jay Bennett, who left us way too soon. Get screening info here.
And it's the end of an era: The Ernest Tubb Record Shop is closing after 71 years. The Tennesseean has some amazing photos of the Nashville landmark.
Attention, comics artists! Dean Haspiel and I are co-jurors of an exciting comics-themed exhibition at Brooklyn's 440 Gallery. Apply here before May 10. Please spread the word!
I have a new book on Epic! This time Samir is having a grand time in...well, I can't tell you, because that would give away the ending. Enjoy it with a small friend, and search my name for more books. (Epic is free through most libraries and schools.)
