Smells like Friday 🍌
Are you reading this in the bathtub? At the dog park? Beneath a blanket with a flashlight? This is what I imagine as I sit at my wobbly IKEA desk.
22 things that look good to me, aside from you:
1. THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES - Thrilled it's back--and now with Jason Schwartzman! Just try to stare at Eric Roberts's teeth and not be hypnotized.
2. SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE - Please let this funny/oddball Bridget Everett series last.
3. 1883 - Faith Hill and Tim McGraw star in this YELLOWSTONE spinoff that you and your mother-in-law are going to love.
4. PEACEMAKER - The best opening credits I've seen in a long time (and also a funny/weird/entertaining show).
5. SEARCH PARTY - The cult comedy has gone all cult-y in its final season. I may marathon several eps this weekend.
6. THAT'S MY JAM - The kid and I LOVE this goofy musical game show. Shhh.
7. MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN - I finished the first season, and holy moly, I did NOT see where that was going. If you haven't seen all the eps, keep watching.
8. BELLE - This new anime film delivers a lovely modern take on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. If you see it at an Alamo theater, go early for the pre-show, which details the history of "Beauty and the Beast" in film and TV.
9. UZUMAKI - I just finished reading Junji Ito's disturbing manga about spirals that take over a town. And hey, it looks like it's being made into a series!
10. MUMBAI NEW YORK SCRANTON - I loved Tamara Shopsin's memoir ARBITRARY STUPID GOAL, so I tracked down a copy of her out-of-print travelogue. Remember traveling? Sigh.
11. DEAD EYES - Connor Ratliff has spent 27 podcast episodes wondering why Tom Hanks rejected him for BAND OF BROTHERS. In the new ep, he talks to ... Colin Hanks!
12. CONAN O'BRIEN NEEDS A FRIEND - Great conversation with Zach Galifianakis, who apparently lives in Canada now.
13. Shades of Vanilla - I broke down and bought this coffee after hearing so much about it on the brilliant ASK RONNA podcast.
14. Françoise Gilot - The artist and former muse to Picasso is 100 and had much to say to the New York Times. (Her memoir, LIFE WITH PICASSO, is a total page-turner, as you might imagine.)
15. Sheila Heti - The writer is doing an experimental fiction/memoir/newsletter thing that just launched.
16. BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE - Saw this movie with the kid and I'm not crying, you are! On Disney+.
17. Whitney pencils - Went to the Whitney Museum and had to grab these pencils made in Shelbyville, Tenn. Here's a story about the famous Musgrave Pencil Company.
18. Milk's KUSH mascara - I'm not being paid, I just dig this mascara.
19. SEVERANCE - This new series looks ETERNAL SUNSHINE-esque.
20. Louie Anderson, Meat Loaf, André Leon Talley - R.I.P. to these icons. I saw Louie perform a few years ago, and he truly made each audience member feel like they were his new best friend.
21. "Hoeing" by John Updike - Still as true as when it was first published in 1963.
22. And here's a comic - what would you be? (More on Patreon...)
Thanks for reading--and a belated happy bday to my mom! (Dean Haspiel drew this card. My dad has glasses and a mustache, hence Superman's look!) See ya soon, and recruit me for your potions at whitmath@gmail.com.
