Don't tell Columbia House... 🎹
She can take a hit.
This week packed a punch: lots of work, little sleep, too much pizza. But ya know what? It's about to turn around because I'm doing something AMAZING this weekend ... which I'll discuss next week. Such a tease!
The above image is of my doppelgänger, tough-as-nails reporter Winona Richards, who resurfaces in this week's chapter of Dean Haspiel's THE RED HOOK. Read Seasons 1, 2, 3 and 4 for free on Webtoon. (They look best via the Webtoon mobile app.) Blammo!
I love this movie: 'The Target Shoots First'
Since several of you dug my music documentary recommendations last week, lemme give you one more: Chris Wilcha's THE TARGET SHOOTS FIRST, a fascinating chronicle of his time working at Columbia House in the '90s.
I rewatched the film this week, and whoa, what a time capsule it has become of so many things: the music industry, corporate America, the philosophy of "selling out." Watch it on YouTube; it's only about an hour and will stick with you long after the credits roll.
['80s music break]
KCRW has a fantastic podcast called BENT BY NATURE about Deirdre O'Donoghue, an influential DJ I'd never heard of until now. Deirdre hosted a late-night radio show in the '80s called SNAP! and helped tons of underground artists receive the recognition they deserved. The podcast includes excerpts from SNAP! and interviews with those who loved her, including Julian Cope, Michael Stipe and members of The Mighty Lemon Drops, Concrete Blonde, Camper Van Beethoven and other bands. Listen wherever you get your podcasts, then hear this wonderful Spotify playlist of the music Deirdre championed.
Semi-related: Miles Copeland talked to SOUND OPINIONS about I.R.S. Records and his new memoir ... Rick Rubin had a swell conversation with Henry Rollins ... Howard Kremer did a record release battle between Duran Duran and Guided by Voices.
GIMME MORE: Can't stop watching WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS and YELLOWSTONE, two great shows with nothing in common...Can't wait to read Patricia Highsmith's diaries...Can't stop laughing at video of New Yorkers crossing the street during the NYC marathon.
My kids' books are comin' atcha fast and furious this winter! Kids ages 3 and up will dig WHERE IN THE WORLD? WITH SAMIR AND KIRRA, which was just released on Epic as a book and audiobook. (Alejandro Mesa's art is the coolest.)
You can also read REALLY WEIRD MYSTERIES: UNICORNS and get my book WE MAKE COMICS on Epic and in print, bundled with ANIMAL RESCUE FRIENDS: VOL. 1.
