pulp candy 🍭
I'm sweatin' all over my apps.
It's so dang hot that I look like a Dalí painting that's been set on fire, but I'll spare you the synonyms and get on with it already:
- I watched ROADRUNNER, the Anthony Bourdain doc, and cried about 12 times. (There's an Iggy Pop moment that just crumbled me.) I found it mesmerizing, relatable and incredibly sad. Bourdain inspired so many of us to become comfortable with feeling uncomfortable, and I can't think of a better legacy. Artist David Choe gives a particularly poignant interview; his new Hulu series looks fantastic.
- And holy moly, have you seen VAL on Amazon Prime? Val Kilmer has held a video camera since he was a wee man, and the doc includes never-before-seen footage from the sets of most of his movies, including THE DOORS and THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU. (I don't wanna tell you how many times I watched THE DOORS as a teen. A group of girls passed that VHS tape around like it was contraband ... which I guess it kind of was.)
- My friend Jill made me take the NY Times dialect quiz, which eerily pinpointed where I grew up!
- How did I miss the fact that THE STATE cast remade "Porcupine Racetrack" during the pandemic?
- My daughter is obsessed with the Sammy Keyes mysteries, which I'd never heard of until a young bookstore employee informed me it was her favorite series in the late '90s/early 2000s. There are 18 of 'em, which should keep her occupied for the next, oh, three days.
- Our friend Sean McNulty is rocking his daily media newsletter. It's often the first email I open in the morning.
- I'm looking forward to a long, quiet moment when I can read the New Yorker's new profile of Michael Stipe.
- And lordy, now even your baby can pretend to be a vlogger.
My friend Dean loaned me Will McPhail's new graphic novel, IN, and it knocked my socks clear across the room. The story focuses on a lonely young man desperate to connect with anyone, anytime, any way he can.
This is the view I see when I walk/bike home from my studio at night. Isn't she lovely?
Yep, I'm still making diary comics and posting them at patreon.com/whitneymatheson. Thanks for your support!
