I love your elbows 💪
What's in your fanny pack?
This week marks what would've been my grandmother's 100th birthday. Honey--that's her icing a cake as my cousin, brother and I salivate--was fun and talkative and made the best fried chicken you've ever had. I wish an ounce of her kitchen prowess had rubbed off on me!
A few things I'm digging at the moment:
- Last night I saw SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH, a fantastic indie starring Kevin Corrigan, Thomas Jay Ryan and Max Casella. Written and shot in 2020, it tells the story of two priests who decide to open up their NYC church during the pandemic. Director Onur Tukel inspires me with his immersive storytelling and ability to make a damn good movie during quarantine! Rent it now via all streaming platforms.
- New Orleans-based writer Gabe Soria visited our studio this week. (That's him above with Dean Haspiel and my shabby self.) Gabe keeps the coolest Moleskine notebooks I've ever seen and writes tons of stuff for kids and grownups, including the "Midnight Arcade" series. Follow him on Instagram at @bitchinville. Â
- My friend Kevin tells me The Connells are on tour. I've loved this band for 30 years; see 'em in TN/GA/NC, and let me know if you're going to the Brooklyn show!
- Michael Ian Black and his wife, interior designer Martha Hagen Black, bought an old house in Savannah and are documenting the renovations on Instagram. I wish them luck and have dug their posts so far ... though this sounds highly stressful and I hope to never renovate a house in my life.
This week longtime reader Pete K. told me about how he found some incredible celebrity portraits at an estate sale. (Check out that Jamie Farr!) When the band The Webstirs heard about it, they asked to incorporate the paintings in their new music video. Take a look at the amusing and disturbing result.
In the latest Nightwork Studio video, Dean asks me about my recent self-imposed writing retreat. And because no one believed that I really did have to hoist myself down a rope to get into town, here's a photo:
