My fave pandemic purchases ๐
Spend thatย money!
I've tried to be frugal during this pandemic, but I do have moments of weakness--like when I go to the comics shop and just know that my sizable stack will bring The Kid & I many hours of happiness.
Above is a pic of my latest haul. For fans of WANDAVISION, THE VISION: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION is a fantastic feat of storytelling!
Below are a few other things I've purchased that have brightened these lonely masked days:
HOT DOG ROLLER - I got this idea from Manolo Moreno, who said he missed Coney Island hot dogs during quarantine. It set me back $35--and, combined with my accordion, I should be full-on carny by summer.
PORTABLE DRAWING TABLEย - Made by Nnewvante (and bought via Amazon), this might be my smartest quarantine purchase. The height and angle are adjustable, and there's even a little drawer for my pens! On the weekends I eat pancakes on it.
GEL PATCHES FOR MY TIRED FACE - Skyn Iceland makes this thing called Face-Lift-in-a-Bag that greatly disturbs my family but makes me feel like I'm doing something very healthy and proactive for my skin.
LEG WARMERS - Eight bucks! They really jazz up my hole-y jeans.
New stuff from our friends:
- Longtime reader Sean McNulty started a daily newsletter called THE WAKEUPย that gives a handy rundown of the day's entertainment news. I've been loving it this week. Sign up!
- Michael Paul Stephenson has a new documentary out called ATTACK OF THE MURDER HORNETS. (BEST WORST MOVIE, his amazing doc that told the story of TROLL 2, and was my favorite film of 2009.) Watch the trailer and see it now on Discovery Plus.ย "Strangely, for me, it was these murder hornets that offered a bright spot in a very grim year," he told me.
- Our friend Davy Rothbart (FOUND magazine founder, THIS AMERICAN LIFE contributor, brilliant writer) has a new doc out called 17 BLOCKS. Davy spent 20 years (!) filming a family in Southeast Washington, D.C., and the result is a powerful portrait you won't forget. Here's the trailer. See it in theaters or in virtual cinemas.
- Longtime reader and BEING EARNEST podcasterย Paula Skaggs made a card game! NO WRONG ANSWERS: NON-BURNING QUESTIONS TO KICK OFF CONVERSATIONSย is "a great option for people who have been stuck together all of quarantine and have nothing left to talk about, or for family get-togethers where you'll do anything to avoid talking about the pandemic." Ha! Grab 'em while they're hot.
