🍒 91 songs from '91 & a new Winona 🍒
I'll take it on the rocks.
Apologies for my tardiness--I spent the week on "staycation" with my daughter at an Airbnb, and I'm a bit reluctant to rejoin the old world. Nothing beats a change of scenery, even if it's just a few blocks away!
Some quickies:
1. This week a new character popped up in Dean Haspiel's weekly webcomic, THE RED HOOK. Winona Richards is a dark-haired reporter with a nose for news and a taste for Moscow mules. See more of me--ahem, her--over on Webtoon, and please hit the "like" button if you dig it.
2. I made a new Spotify playlist of 91 songs from 1991! Most fall under the alt-rock category, though Cher and the Divinyls also surface. Enjoy.
3. Thanks to everyone who tuned in for our latest HOLIDAY SQUARES livestream. You can still watch the show on YouTube and Twitch; guests include Kelly AuCoin, Annie Choi, Larry Hama, Alex de Campi, Dean Haspiel, Scott Sickles and Lizz Winstead with host Matt Champagne.
4. Need more music? Our pal Natasha recommends Matthew Perpetua's Spotify playlists, particularly this one of "After Punk 1980-1983" that lasts almost 10 hours.
5. Joe K. sent me this clip of Rick Astley covering R.E.M. Ah, he knows me too well.
6. ROCK CAMP, a new doc about rock 'n' roll fantasy camp, just came out, and I wanna see it.
7. Dave H. tells us that we can read Tillie Walden's ON A SUNBEAM for free at onasunbeam.com. "Koi-shaped spacecraft? YES!" Dave says of Walden's 2018 graphic novel. "A wholly unique well-thought-out sci-fi universe? YES! LGBTQIA+ AND neuro-divergent positive? YES! A heartbreakingly beautiful coming-of-age story about first loves told non-sequentially? YES! A title inspired by Belle and Sebastian's 'Asleep on a Sunbeam?' YES!"
8. Speaking of graphic novels, I just read PENNY NICHOLS, the delightful book from MK Reed, Greg Means & Matt Wiegle about a woman who's inspired by working on a low-budget horror flick.
9. I'm also in the middle of Ethan Hawke's new novel, A BRIGHT RAY OF DARKNESS. Order a signed copy from Jake over at The Alabama Booksmith and tell him I sent ya.
10. My daughter has been watching the British animated series APPLE & ONION, which does for food jokes what BOJACK did for animal puns.
11. And finally, I'm still posting diary comics on Patreon. Join at patreon.com/whitneymatheson, and thanks for your support!
