Game nights & hot dog rollers 🍺
Shall we play a game?
Ayyyyyy! First, the photo: I'm trying to fight off those WINTER BLUES by playing games on Saturday. Wanna join? Tune in at 9 p.m. ET for the livestream via Facebook, YouTube or Twitch.
Players include Kelly AuCoin (from Billions and The Americans), Annie Choi (writer/author of Happy Birthday or Whatever), Tarik Davis (from The Amber Ruffin Show), Alex de Campi (writer of MADI, Dracula, Motherfu**er! & other comics), Dean Haspiel (my co-organizer of these shindigs), Scott Sickles (General Hospital writer and playwright) and Lizz Winstead (comedian and co-creator of The Daily Show).
Dang, that's a whole lotta talent! Please watch/comment/enjoy.
11 more things:
1. I'm still adding to my playlist of fave music from 2021. New stuff includes songs from Deer Tick with Shovels and Rope, Cloud Nothings, TRZTN (feat. Karen O), Pearl Charles and a reissue from honky-tonker Slim Whitman.
2. WandaVision turned an interesting corner this week. Don't spoil--I have zero idea where it's going!
3. On the latest ep of Dr. Gameshow, Manolo Moreno made me laugh so hard when he talked about purchasing a hot dog roller to jazz up his quarantine.
4. Seth Abramovitch's profile of Shelley Duvall is a sadly beautiful must-read.
5. My 8-year-old is immersed in Pictures at the Protest, the latest in Steven K. Smith's "Virginia Mysteries" series for kids. Published in December, it's set during the COVID-19 pandemic and talks about protests over Confederate monuments, the fight to desegregate schools in the '50s/'60s and the importance of standing up for what's right.
6. I can't wait for the Patti Smith/Lenny Kaye 50th anniversary show. Tickets are $10.
7. Thanks to Julia M., a reader who recommends Resident Alien on Syfy. Starring Alan Tudyk, it follows an alien who lands on earth and tries to pose as a small-town doctor.
8. Our longtime friend Josh Mills has launched a podcast called RAREFIED HEIR, in which he talks to the children of celebrities. Among the guests are Carnie Wilson, Antonia Bogdanovich, and Josh himself, whose mother was the mega-talented actress/comedian Edie Adams.
9. I'm intrigued by LITTLE FISH, a new sci-fi romance film about a global pandemic where the infected rapidly lose their memories.
10. HUGE thanks to my Patreon supporters, and shout-outs to new patrons Travis, Jenn and Leanne! Join at patreon.com/whitneymatheson.
11. And finally, this week a French nun celebrated her 117th birthday with red wine, baked Alaska and a Mass in her honor. Born in 1904, Lucille Randon is the second-oldest person in the world.
