🎅 More rad 'n' artsy GIFT IDEAS! 🎅
Need more gift ideas? Try these (or just stuff an envelope with cash and glitter):Â Â
Last week I shared . Here are 11 more--and I know many of these folks, so if you buy something, tell 'em I sent ya!Â
1. Our friend Esther Pearl Watson has been publishing "Pandemic Recipes" zines with inspired dishes like "Small Business Loan Molasses Cookies" and "Braless 'N Sweatpants Margaritas."Â She has lots of other fun stuff in her online store; use the code FUN20DISCOUNT for 20% off.
2. My pal Camille Morin makes rad pop-culture pottery inspired by everything from Prince to roller skating. Check out her wares in the Belle Epoque Pottery Etsy store or on her website, where she takes custom orders.
3. Our esteemed friends at PleaseKillMe.com have an online shop that includes autographed copies of one of my all-time favorite books, PLEASE KILL ME: THE UNCENSORED ORAL HISTORY OF PUNK by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain. Keep one on hand at all times! Â
4. Leroy's Place had to close its Brooklyn location during quarantine, but the art keeps coming and includes Hall & Oates earrings, a nervous banana mug and itty-bitty taco earrings. C'mon, where else are you gonna get soap that looks like saltine crackers?
5. I love a good notebook almost as much as I love my kid, and Japanese stationery company Midori has it down to a science. Find them at finer bookstores/paper shops (or, if you don't have one, they're also on Amazon). Tip: If this is your first Midori notebook, you can buy a reusable clear cover to protect it.Â
6. Our pal Jen Ferguson sells affordable artwork and drawing/painting classes. If you read our PANDEMIX anthology, you've seen her inspired and creature-filled journal entries--she teaches an online Creative Journaling class, too. Â
7. The marvelous Renee French made a festive snowman ornament that you can buy over at printsonwood.com. I love this site for original gifts; use the code BESTGIFT to get 20% off.Â
8. I'm not big on beauty gimmicks, but my one guilty pleasure is these cooling eye gels from Skyn Iceland, which are a little pricey but truly do make me feel less puffy and grumpy. I also have a pair of Allegra Baby Magic Globes--also the name of my new one-woman show!--that I use sometimes to stave off a headache.
9. My 8-year-old is obsessed with Cards Against Humanity: Family Edition. I hesitate to share this because all the poop humor drives me up the wall, but it does make her laugh harder than any other game we have.Â
10. Hatch Show Print has long been my go-to for ultra-cool letterpress stuff. Hey, look at this hot dog garland! Treat yourself to a Johnny Cash or Patsy Cline poster! They also make mighty fine Music City mugs, pillows, shirts and everything else.
11. And finally, my standby present (and favorite kitchen item) is ... a banana hanger. You can find them everywhere in all kinds of styles, and I'm always surprised how few folks I know have one. Don't let those bananas get brown!
EVENTS! Last week my kid sketched this portrait of Patti Smith while we watched her fantastic livestream. Tonight, you may wanna tune in to Dolly Parton's holiday concert on Pandora (9 p.m. ET). On Saturday the SMooCH benefit livestream has a lineup that includes Kim Gordon, J Mascis, Angel Olsen, Jason Isbell, Bret McKenzie, Ben Gibbard and Fred Armisen. Holy moly!
Give my love to your pets, and I'll see you soon. Toss virtual tinsel on me at whitmath@gmail.com. Don't get a haircut, it looks great as is.
It's business time,
