this subject line kisses you 😘
Get a leg up!
Holy Michael Imperioli, is it Friday again? I hope you've laughed at least 35 times since we last spoke.
First up, I wanna tell you that HEARTBREAK SWEATER, a short comic I made, is now on Instagram. Thanks to everyone who has read it and said nice things! Your encouragement makes me wanna make more.
Also of note:
- I'm moderating a panel at (virtual) Baltimore Comic-Con this Sunday at 3 p.m. ET about "Genre as Autobio." Panelists include Stan Sakai, Alex Segura, Dean Haspiel, Erica Schultz and Dave Kelly. Please join, and check the full lineup for a bunch of rad free panels. We'll have a time!
- Patti Smith was interviewed on WTF this week, and it was a wave of inspiration. She talked about William Burroughs, Sam Shepard and the challenge of staying inspired while quarantined. Her words prompted me to read COWBOY MOUTH, the one-act play she wrote with Shepard in 1971 at the Chelsea Hotel. Click that link and spend the next 20-ish minutes in a tornado of language and blood-red passion (and lobsters).Â
- Head to my Spotify playlist of new music to hear new tracks from Fleet Foxes, New Order, Lana Del Rey, The Avalanches & Rivers Cuomo, Sufjan Stevens, Cut Worms (covering Tom Petty's "Louisiana Rain"), Dehd, Sir Woman, Portugal. The Man. & "Weird Al" Yankovic, Blood Orange & Park Hye Jin and Bottler. There's so much great stuff this week!
- I've become obsessed with DRIFTERS, a British comedy about three girlfriends who can hold their liquor better than they can hold down a job. It's the perfect thing to watch after a long, stressful day (and free via Amazon Prime). If you need more enticement, note that Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote a few episodes pre-FLEABAG.Â
- Whenever David Letterman pops up, I'm 15% happier. Read his interview in the New York Times and hear him on Busy Philipps's podcast.Â
- GRATEFUL DEAD: ORIGINS is a new graphic novel about the formation of the band written by Chris Miskiewicz and illustrated by Noah Van Sciver. Whether you're a casual or hardcore fan, it's worth dipping into and also features a download of rare Dead music.
- I interviewed Bootsy Collins recently, but you gotta be an AARP member to read the story! (BTW, does anyone have an extra copy of the October issue? If so, holler.)
- I'm digging CANDID, the new record from Whitney (the band). Their songs are quick, sunny and complement a long drive or a hammock nap ... not to mention they have some sweet merch with my name on it.Â
Questions for YOU: Have you seen the 1981 movie THE LOVELESS, which is on the Criterion Channel and looks kinda great? And is TED LASSO worth the Apple TV+ subscription? I have TOO MANY SUBSCRIPTIONS!
Here's the first panel of a comic I wrote about a conversation I had with my daughter about the F-word. Read it if you wanna!
Thank you and good night! Email words and pictures to whitmath@gmail.com. I wish you a week of fresh produce and old dreams that are finally coming true.
Now is ze time vhen we dance,
