Love...exciting and NEW. 📺
This newsletter GLEAMS WITH NEWNESS!
Well, hello again! This week has been jam-packed with tight deadlines, scattered philosophies, plump hearts, creaky flooring, freckled hopes and homemade birthday cakes.
Below are 11 things I'm digging right now--and hey, all of them are BRAND NEW! Nothin' dusty in this email.Â
NEW TV: Season 4 of FARGO is off to an intriguing start. This time around, it's 1950 in Kansas City, Mo., and if you dare look away from Chris Rock or Jason Schwartzman, they might come after ya. The first two eps are on Hulu.Â
MORE NEW TV:Â SOULMATES is a six-episode anthology series set 15 years in the future, when there's "a test that unequivocally tells you who your soulmate is." (I assume chaos ensues.) It premieres Oct. 5 on AMC.
NEW PODCAST: My fave DRAG RACE alums Trixie Mattel and Katya are launching a podcast called THE BALD AND THE BEAUTIFUL on Oct. 6. Gimme! Here's a trailer.
SPEAKING OF TRIXIE:Â This video of Trixie Mattel trying to make a pizza in a 1970s Pizza Hut toy oven had me snorting with laughter...and JEALOUSY.
AND ANOTHER NEW PODCAST: Actor Stephen Tobolowsky is back with his fantastic podcast, THE TOBOLOWSKY FILES. Hosted by our longtime pal David Chen, each episode contains an amazing tale from the actor's brilliant career.
NEW MOVIE: I'LL BE AROUND is a SLACKER-influenced, punk-flavored indie with a huge cast that includes a special appearance by my imaginary wacky downstairs neighbor, J Mascis. Rent it now.
NEW DOCUMENTARY:Â I'm eager to see J.R. "BOB" DOBBS & THE CHURCH OF THE SUBGENIUS, a doc about the joke-turned-religion featuring Richard Linklater, Nick Offerman and others. Stream it Oct. 16.Â
ANOTHER NEW DOC: The trailer for R.J. Cutler's new John Belushi documentary just dropped. See it on Showtime in November.Â
NEW MUSICAL EXPERIMENT: Deerhoof released the coolest guitar-driven covers medley this week. Hear it on Bandcamp and see a list of the 43(!) songs they cover in 19 minutes, from Gary Numan's "Cars" to the JETSONS theme.
NEW KIDS' BOOK: My daughter just read NICO BRAVO AND THE CELLAR DWELLERS, the second book in Mike Cavallaro's series of graphic novels. She didn't want to go to sleep before finishing it, and was very happy to report "there's a GIRL HERO!" this time around.Â
NEW CREATIVE PROJECT: The Sweded Film Festival is looking for the best low-budget re-creations of our favorite movie moments. (Should I do a death scene from HAROLD & MAUDE? The mashed potatoes sequence in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS?) Deadline is Nov. 15.
HEY, I UPDATED MY NEW MUSIC PLAYLIST!
I just added new tracks from Stephen Malkmus, Teleseen, The Shins, Phoenix, Jeff Tweedy, and Tim Heidecker with Weyes Blood to my Spotify playlist of new music. Such sonic bliss!
I love hearing from you, whether it's via whitmath@gmail.com or telepathically. OK, have a great weekend! Always wear a helmet and order the egg salad!
