My hair is full of podcasts ✂
18 things I wanna tell you:
1. Hi again! On a scale of "hrm" to "woo," how are you feeling? Oh, yeah? Me too.
2. I watched JOJO RABBIT on HBO Max the other night. It's great. You may know this already.
3. I'm also watching Season 2 of COBRA KAI on Netflix. (When you're a kid you love the Beatles and Ralph Macchio, but when you grow up, it turns out the Stones and Billy Zabka are more your speed.)
4. I rewatched LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS this week. I still miss John Candy.
5. The SOUND OPINIONS podcast did an excellent Replacements/Mission of Burma episode.
6. Bret Easton Ellis has been doing deep dives into Tom Cruise's career on his podcast.
7. My friend Meribah Knight just launched Season 2 of her wonderful podcast THE PROMISE.
8. I can't remember if I've mentioned my excitement for Miranda July's new film, KAJILLIONAIRE, but it's worth repeating. Here's the trailer.
9. My daughter is currently obsessed with the '70s Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys TV series. I find it oddly soothing.
10. The SMARTLESS podcast--hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes--interviewed Robert Downey Jr.
11. Russell Brand popped up on Duncan Trussell's podcast. (What can I say? I listen to a pile of podcasts.)
12. UNHHHH is back with new eps if you need a Trixie/Katya fix (which I always do). And hey, they wrote a book!
13. This week I appeared on the ETCETERA ETC podcast to talk about work, life, KISS makeup, etc.
14. I added Hot Chip's cover of the Velvet Underground's "Candy Says," to my Spotify playlist of new music.
15. Also on the playlist are new songs by Better Person and Thurston Moore, along with the remastered version of Elliott Smith's "Coming Up Roses," which you can find on the 25th anniversary release of his self-titled record. (Again, my playlist is called "hi, i'm new here.")
16. The movie TEENAGE BADASS looks right up my alley. Look for it Sept. 18.
17. If you're out of shape but hate scary gym 'tudes, Pony Sweat Aerobics and Punk Rock Aerobics do live workouts that are all perspiration/rock 'n' roll and zero judgment.
18. And finally, the next time you feel a cool breeze hit your shoulder, just know IT IS ME.
I saw some DRIVE-IN COMEDY ...
I actually LEFT THE HOUSE this week to see a special "drive-in comedy special" hosted by Colin Quinn. What makes drive-in comedy different from regular comedy? For starters, people flash lights and honk horns as they laugh. Also, you can take off your pants and no one will notice!
The lineup included Sam Jay, Robert Kelly, Bonnie McFarlane, Dan Soder, Keith Robinson and others. Catch the full show on HBO Max later this year.

Movie rec: CALIFORNIA SUITE
Based on a Neil Simon play, this 1978 comedy features an all-star cast that includes Jane Fonda, Alan Alda, Richard Pryor, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Walter Matthau and Elaine May. It tells several stories that take place over the course of one night at a luxury hotel--and the jokes come fast 'n' furious, so don't try to multitask while you watch!
If I can stay up to watch an entire movie in one night, you know it's gotta be good. Stream CALIFORNIA SUITE via the Criterion Channel (or via other spots for a small rental fee).
That's it for now! If you email me at whitmath@gmail.com, please put your favorite casserole in the subject line. It's gonna be OK. Or not! Gotta love a surprise ending.
You are a golden god,
Johnny Fever
