New headphones, old cartoons 🎧
Spaceships, corn chips, comic strips.Â
The other day my daughter made this TV--the screen is a magnet so she can "create her own shows." I can't wait to see what adorable insanity will fill it.
Also this week, I was interviewed by Jed Keith at FreakSugar about the PANDEMIX comics anthology and other stuff. Diamond Bookshelf posted a teacher's guide to PANDEMIX. And I've been working on a kids' book and some other things I'll tell you more about very soon. Gotta keep busy!
Documentary recommendation:
HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY: THE REN & STIMPY STORY
This new doc delves into the twisted and revolutionary '90s cartoon, which viewers either loved or loathed (I loved it) and has influenced countless series since. I watched it last night and was amazed the show ever made it to air--on Nickelodeon, no less.
The film also addresses creator John Kricfalusi's predatory behavior. (He isn't involved in the just-announced R&S reboot.) It's disturbing, no doubt, but it's also clear the show was a team effort, and it was the artists and talents around him who infused the characters with such heart. Â
Here's the trailer. Rent it via Amazon, iTunes, etc.
Follow my Spotify playlist, "hi, i'm new here," for music recs. I just added these:Â
1. "Expectations," Katie Pruitt - This Nashville singer-songwriter will brighten your blood vessels.
2. "3 x 3,," Pylon - A rockin' oldie is from the Athens band's new box set.
3. "Solipsism," Fenne Lily - The British musician just released a video for this, too.
4. "Nos vemos en los suenos," Control Future - Slip inside a happy darkwave trance.Â
5. "Zane, The Scribe," Jyoti/Georgia Anne Muldrow - Experimental jazz sounds to ease the busy mind.
I got new headphones!
I'd been holding off on buying noise-canceling headphones, but this pandemic (and a loud workspace) prompted me to purchase Sony's just-released wh-1000XM4 cans. They're pricey, but they do everything but milk a goat--and I haven't read the instruction manual, so they might do that, too.
My favorite things about these bluetooth 'phones include the long battery life, noise-canceling quality and the fact that when I take them off, they automatically pause my music! Also, just by swiping one ear I can raise/lower the volume, and I can connect them to my laptop and phone at the same time. (Somehow it can even sense the shape of my ear to maximize sound quality, which sounds like some kinda wizard action.)
I give 'em a zillion outta a bajillion stars.
A wad o'Â trailers:
- THE BATMANÂ &Â WONDER WOMAN 1984: Exciting and new.
- ETERNAL BEAUTY: Sally Hawkins loses her mind and meets a musician. (Don't we all!)
- RUTH WEISS, THE BEAT GODESS: Portrait of the Beat-era pioneer (above) who died last month at age 92.   Â
- ROUTE ONE/USA: Support Lincoln Center by renting the restored version of Robert Kramer's '80s road doc.
Damn good coffee
This week I've been sucking down David Lynch's coffee every morning, and I know that sounds like an ad, but I swear I come by it honestly. (That said, if you wanna advertise here, holler. Rent's due soon!)
I miss your sweet face. If you email me at whitmath@gmail.com, put your favorite fictional detective in the subject line. Make something beautiful and/or bananas today.
