Kiss me on the bus π
Yawning in the streets,
wide awake in the sheets.
Man, pandemic insomnia is a beast! I don't know if it's the heat or stress or what have you, but I haven't been snoozing enough lately. This week I gotta embrace less coffee, more bike rides and the soothing sound of Krista Tippett's voice to ease me into a quarantined summer slumber.
And hey: Thanks to all of you who have been participating in my daily #HeyIMadeThis challenges. You can see them all on Instagram, but the last few days have included things like making a short comic, drawing a tattoo on your body, taking the most boring photo of all timeΒ and putting eyes on things that don't have eyes. Below is some work other folks have created:
11 things I wanna tell you:
1. I ponied up for HBO Max so I could start watching SEARCH PARTY's third season. It's good, but it has been sooooo long since Season 2--which aired in 2017!--that I can't remember much of what happened. One can never have enough John Early, though. (Here he is Zooming with Seth Meyers a couple weeks ago.)
2. The other day I watched SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. I thought I'd seen it before, but I must've watched the "edited for TV" version or something, because this was not the same film! Please indulge my most delayed, ridiculous hot take of all time and see this movie, because it's phenomenal and joyful and heartbreaking, and it's physically impossible to turn away from John Travolta's face.
3. Conan O'Brien's Tom Hanks interview is grand, even if they do talk about World War II alotalot.
4. Beck turned 50 this week and released a remix of his song "Distraction" by Khruangbin. My husband contends that Khruangbin is the perfect music to listen to while working, and I have to agree. Their latest album, MORDECHAI, came out a couple weeks ago.
5. Gary Larson hadn't posted a new THE FAR SIDE comic in 25 years ... until this week. Fantastic.
6. My daughter and I finished watching THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB, and it's wonderful and will reheat your soul. But, uh, just a heads-up: One episode talks about periods, which might make for some lively and unexpected dinner conversation later! (I swear that subplot wasn't in the books...)
7. LAS CULTURISTAS, the podcast hosted by Matt Rogers and SNL's Bowen Yang, finished counting down its hilarious "top 200 moments in culture history." Only this show could put TITANIC and "girls named Amanda" on the same list.
8. Sorry this is so podcast-heavy, but I'm also obsessed with a show called THE GREAT FAIL. Each ep profiles a company that failed spectacularly, whether it's Tower Records or L.A. Gear or Atari.Β Β
9. San Diego Comic-Con is turning into Comic-Con@Home this year, with more than 350 panels streaming online. Anyone need a moderator?
10. A friend sent me a link to Marlon Brando's 1968 appearance on THE TONIGHT SHOW, in which he speaks against racism and demands his Hollywood friends take action. It's powerful in so many ways--and I couldn't help but contrast it with today's fast-paced entertainment, where no one could speak seriously on camera for 15 minutes without being interrupted and/or asked to participate in some goofy game or gimmick.
11. Finally, I started watching HBO's PERRY MASON but holy machete, there's an image in the first five minutes I wish I could unsee (and then they show it again). I don't know how long Perry and I will last, though my love forΒ Matthew RhysΒ will endure 'til the end of time.Β
And YOU recommend ... Dean is psyched about the trailer for Season 2 of THE BOYS ... Chad loved Ben Gibbard's appearance on Josh Kantor's 7TH-INNING STRETCH ... Nelson wants us to hear the Spotify playlist "SYD, ROGER, RICHARD, NICK AND DAVID," which features surviving Pink Floyd members sharing previously unavailable studio and live tracks ... And Mitch read Blake Crouch'sΒ RECURSIONΒ and says it's "mind-blowing contemporary sci-fi."
My biscuits are burnin', so I gotta run. Thanks for reading, and find me atΒ whitmath@gmail.com, Patreon,Β InstagramΒ and in your dreams.
