Fresh diversions, a new podcast, banjo dreams 🎇
11 things I wanna tell you:
1. First of all, hello! I hope your belly is full and your hair is clean.Â
2. I heard such nice things about last week's newsletter that I just posted another podcast/audio check-in on Patreon. In it, I share more contenders for the greatest American rock band. I also read a short story written by one of YOU. It's available to patrons at all levels.
3. I put Ottessa Moshfegh's DEATH IN HER HANDS on my Kindle. I gave several friends copies of her previous book, MY YEAR OF REST AND RELAXATION, and have avoided reviews of the new one so I can be surprised. Hopes are high.
4. I listened to a bunch of podcasts this week, including YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS (my fave podcast right now!), DEAD EYES and WEB CRAWLERS. Several of you have told me to listen to the recent ep of REVISIONIST HISTORY where Malcolm Gladwell talks about Andy Warhol's hoarding tendencies, so listen I shall.
5. I was thrilled to be featured in this article about the 30th anniversary of Uncle Tupelo's NO DEPRESSION album. Thanks to Will Hodge for writing such a great piece and inspiring me to listen to that record again.
6. SEARCH PARTY is back, but I don't think I can spring for HBO Max at the moment. If you've never watched, the pilot is on YouTube.
7. Chad sent a link to John Doe's latest livestream, which includes performances of X's "Fourth of July" and Replacements and Merle Haggard covers. Adds Chad: "He said he and Exene call each other once a week during the quarantine and do Mad Libs over the phone. That makes me so happy." If you like what you hear, tip John on PayPal.
8. Dean alerted me that Michael Shannon was on a podcast recently. Check out that sweet q-tine beard.
9. Aug loves the show LETTERKENNY and keeps telling me I gotta watch. All eight(!) seasons are on Hulu.
10. Mike V. is digging the show STARGIRL. "I see it as a bit of a Buffy reboot in which the heroine is a superhero rather than a vampire slayer," he says. Color me curious.
11. And finally, how perfect was Season 2 of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS? It's already been renewed for another season.
This week Mike Cary in Bowling Green, Ky., sent some images of his pop-influenced art. "I've been making something (a painting, print, sculpture) every week for the last few years and leaving them somewhere in my hometown, and it has led to other people doing the same," he says. What's not to love about that? See more of Mike's work on Instagram.
OK! Thanks for reading, and head over to Patreon to hear me talk more. (With your support, you also gain access to things like my 99 graphic novel recs, short stories, etc.) Please keep making things, and reach out with any tips/stories/jokes/what have you at whitmath@gmail.com.
