What's a a 6-letter word for AAARRGGHHH 🔮
Nothing's hotter than a MASK TANLINE.
Hello! Are you there? Am I here? It was a long week, but somehow we made it. I'm mixing up the format because variety is the spice of pandemic.
A few things I've done since we last locked eyes:
Rented THE TRIP TO GREECE & loved it • Laughed out loud at Patton Oswalt's new Netflix comedy special, I LOVE EVERYTHING • Bought a comically large pair of jeans because I'm sick of sitting around in skintight pants • Teared up at Jeff Tweedy's cover of "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" on his Instagram Live show • Used a "color-replenishing gloss" on my hair, did not feel replenished • Read MAD magazine for the first time in decades • Rewatched the LEFTOVERS series finale, which was as great as I'd remembered • Watched Barbara Hammer's AUDIENCE and Kirsten Johnson's CAMERAPERSON on the Criterion Channel • Sweated and fretted • Adored Amy Sedaris' "What's in the drawer?" Instagram posts • Supported Bret Easton Ellis on Patreon so I could hear his conversation with Devo's Gerald Casale • Dug into Slicing Up Eyeballs' list of the top 100 songs of 1987, which comes with a playlist • Watched a bunch of Long Haired Businessman videos • Gave my dad STAR TREK: DISCOVERY for his birthday • Listened to my kid tell me many, many facts about the pygmy marmoset • Joined Board Game Arena
I drew this after a particularly stressful day and felt much better after.
Comics are cathartic! If you make one, I'd love to see it.
What have YOU been doing?
Jed K. finished watching the first season of THE GREAT on Hulu and loved it • Our friend Dean did the artwork for this new mix by DJ Ray Velasquez • Paul was inspired by this list of 30 movies to watch "that are unlike anything you've seen before • Kevin W. is digging Season 2 of this White Stripes podcast • Our friend Adam W. wrote something about Cesar Aira's novels that makes me wanna read them all • Melissa wants us to watch EXTRA ORDINARY with the very funny and talented Maeve Higgins
Hey, Sarah!
Last week Sarah C. asked for fiction, YA, sci-fi and/or fantasy book recs to distract her during these crazy times. A few of your suggestions:
• Steve recommends THE WITCHER books by Andrzej Sapkowski.
• Dave H. loves the CITY OF EMBER series by Jeanne DuPrau.
• Mel loves SPOONBENDERS by Daryl Gregory: "It's set in 1990s Chicago with plotlines that reach back to the '60s," she says. "It starts out as a whimsical, almost-sci-fi romp and gradually becomes a heartwarming, funny family saga."
• Jolie suggests Brandon Sanderson’s series: "My favorites have been the MISTBORN/TWINBORN trilogies, the STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE series and most recently his YA novel and its sequel, SKYWARD & STARSIGHT. She adds, "I love his writing, because in addition to the intricate, well-thought-out worlds he creates, ALL of the women in them are strong and layered and not just someone to be dismissed as vapid arm candy. That can be really hard to find in a book sometimes."
**New Question**
WHERE DID YOU FIND THAT AMAZING FACE MASK?
This week's question is based on MANY emails I've received from folks asking where to find cool (but effective and comfortable!) face masks. Have you found one you love? Does it have Laverne & Shirley or aliens on it? Have you found a mask your kids will actually wear without complaining?
Send tips to whitmath@gmail.com, and I'll share some next week.
Thanks for reading, and thanks for being you. Now go put on a boa and have a DAY.
