TV and stuff ... for your HEALTH!
Baby steps to the laptop ...
Well, hello! I hope you're eating something amazing while wearing formal attire.
Some positive news: I'm feeling better than I have in a month! Slowly but surely, I'm kicking this crappy coronavirus to the curb. If you wanna hear more, I talked about my health and other stuff on Gil Roth's VIRTUAL MEMORIES podcast this week.
A few recs:
1. I just started watching STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, and I'm blissfully addicted. You don't need to be a Trekkie to follow it, and if you were a BATTLESTAR GALACTICA fan, this is 100% for you. That's all I'll say. I'm gonna watch more as soon as I finish writing this.
2. WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS returned this week with two new episodes, and one features an unforgettable appearance by Haley Joel Osment. Bat!
3. This week writer Ed Brubaker launched a new digital comic, FRIDAY, on Panel Syndicate. Beautifully drawn by Marcos Martin, it's a mystery with shades of HARRIET THE SPY. Get Chapter 1 for whatever you wish to pay.
4. Did you see HBO's RUN? What's not to love about a 30-minute comedy-thriller starring Merritt Wever? (Sheesh, I've watched a lot of TV this week.)
5. Wayne White launched his Instagram puppet show!
6. Burger Boogaloo rescheduled its festival (headlined by Bikini Kill and John Waters) for Halloween.
7. This new Second City sketch show made me laugh. Jack McBrayer hosts, Fred Willard and Mike O'Brien pop up and Jeff Tweedy plays "Don't Forget." It's equal parts silly and sweet.
8. Thanks to Ed for pointing me to this FilmJerk podcast about one of my favorite labels, IRS Records.
9. Other notable podcasts this week: Pete Holmes interviews Conan O'Brien, Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman interview Miranda July, Joseph Arthur interviews Stoya.
10. My daughter digs the kids' podcast TWO WHATS?! AND A WOW!, which supplies her with tons of facts about animals, the human body and other cool 'n' gross stuff.
11. Paul H. points us to this list of quarantine movie recs from The Atlantic.
12. Our pal Dean recommends ESCAPE FROM DANNEMORA and the final season of MR. ROBOT, which we're watching at the same time. No spoilers!
13. #Creators4Comics is aiding indie bookstores and comic shops through a series of online auctions. This Google Doc has a full list of auction items; you have to bid via Twitter.
14. Has anyone tried StoryWorth? It sounds like a cool concept--sign up, and it will send questions to someone in your life (like, say, your mother) that you may have never thought to ask. After a year, it'll compile the answers in a book.
15. Here's a trailer for the new Punky Brewster series. Stay away from old refrigerators, kids!
16. I love Built to Spill's new cover of Daniel Johnston's "Mountain Top."
17. Amy P. tells us that Punk Rock Aerobics is doing live workouts on Facebook.
18. Ron O. recommends MRS. AMERICA with Cate Blanchett and Rose Byrne, which is on Hulu.
19. A bunch of you sent me this video of the family that re-created Journey's "Separate Ways." Invisible instruments for the win.
20. Diane tells us that the THRILLING ADVENTURE HOUR podcast is doing live shows through Zoom to benefit food banks. Get details on Twitter. (The latest one included a performance by Rhett Miller.)
21. Ed is digging "Tim's Twitter Listening Party," an interesting concept where Tim Burgess (singer of the The Charlatans) listens to classic/cool records and tweets about them in real time. He posts the schedule of listening parties on his site.
22. Speaking of parties, my daughter and her friends have been doing Netflix Party sessions, and it's pretty cute. I might be down for doing this on Patreon, but what movie do we pick??
23. Beth F. tells us about puppeteer and banjo player David Stephens, who has been going live every morning at 10 a.m. with (what else?) puppets and banjos.
24. By the way, how did I not know Ricky Gervais was in an '80s New Wave band?!
25. And finally, please enjoy this video of Nell Carter, Bea Arthur, Charlotte Rae, Marla Gibbs, Alfonso Ribeiro and Soleil Moon Frye singing a song from the musical DREAMGIRLS. It'll take you ... somewhere.
See ya soon, friends!
