Special edition: A-to-Z pop culture recs!
Welcome back! I hope your week included at least one free breakfast and three extended winks.
In this edition, please enjoy an A-to-Z list of recommendations. Send your own anytime to whitmath@gmail.com, via 929-515-1988 or by placing a soft trinket on your windowsill and gently whispering my name.
Without further ado ...
THIS WEEK'S RECS:
A is for Archers of Loaf, who are embarking upon a tour and just released a new song called "Raleigh Days";
B is for BETTER THINGS, which returns with a new season March 5 and makes me feel better about life/the world/the state of TV;
C is for chocolate hummus, which is basically like eating frosting but it's kinda good for you;
D is for Decrypto, a code-themed word game I had a blast playing last weekend;
E is for EXCELLENCE, the beautiful comic co-created/drawn by my studio mate Khary Randolph that you can also grab as a trade paperback;
F is for FLEISHMAN IS IN TROUBLE, the novel I'm reading and hope to finish by next week's newsletter;
G is for GIL ROTH, podcast host extraordinaire who values smart conversations with cool guests;
H is for Hilma af Klint, the magnificent painter who's the subject of a new documentary;
I is for "Infinity Girl," a Sunshine Boys song recommended by longtime reader/Pop Candy enthusiast Pete K.;
J is for John Early, whose glamorous video made me laugh out loud the other day;
K is for Kevin Smith, who is happy and healthy two years after his heart attack (and I still contend YOGA HOSERS has its merits, but what're ya gonna do);
L is for Lisa Carver, whose delightful book I LOVE ART adorns my nightstand;
M is for MCMILLIONS, which you absolutely MUST watch if you haven't already;
N is for NOISEMAKERS, an amazing new kids' book that features 25 comics about history-making women by 25 fantastic cartoonists;
O is for Orville Peck, who just released another Lynch-ian music video;
P is for Paul Reubens, whose anniversary tour for PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE sounds so stupendous we all wanna marry it;
Q is for quesadillas, because I asked my daughter for a good "q" word and that's what she came up with;
R is for Ronna Glickman, whose hilarious-but-thoughtful ASK RONNA podcast brightens my world;
S is for SCREAM, QUEEN!, a doc that makes me wanna see A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2 as soon as possible;
T is for THE TRUTH, a French film that stars Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche, Ethan Hawke and please hold while I go fan myself;
U is for UNHHHH, which took a hiatus but is back and better than ever;
V is for VHYES, which I'm seeing tonight and am guaranteed to love;
W is for THE WAR OF WOO, my friend Dean's play that has just ONE DAY LEFT in its crowd-funding campaign;
X is for John Doe's Instagram account, which entertains me with things like this video of John singing "Happy Birthday" to himself;
Y is for Young Whit, whose freshly cut hair is chock full o' dreams; and
Z is for zzzzzs, aka sleep, which I've proudly been achieving without the aid of substances for one full month! Holy moly!
SEE YA NEXT WEEK!
