Whit's newsletter: LAST-MINUTE WISH LIST!
Before I head ho-ho-home for the holidays, I wanted to check in to a) see if you're as excited to see CATS as I am* and b) share a few things on my wish list.
I love your look, I adore your spirit and I wanna sip eggnog in your kitchen while we discuss the WATCHMEN finale. But if that can't happen, at least we have this newsletter ...
* When I was in fourth grade, we performed CATS, which was quite ambitious for a small-town elementary school. You haven't lived until you've seen a bunch of 9-year-olds belting out "Mr. Mistoffelees"! I still have my tail.
WHAT I'M INTO (LAST-MINUTE HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE EDITION):
What would I like to see in my stocking? Clear skin and a steady income! But these things would also be swell:
1. A Stitcher Premium subscription. There are suddenly a bunch of good podcasts behind this paywall.
2. A Criterion Channel subscription. It's probably the best streaming service, and yet I still don't have it.
3. MAKING COMICS by Lynda Barry. I've never read a book of hers that didn't make a positive impact on my life.
4. A TodayTix gift card. Theater is the gift that keeps on giving.
5. Air plants. Perfect for folks like me who kill everything.*
6. Whitney Museum merch. Yes, they have rad stuff with my name on it. But they also sell all sorts of jewelry and art and weirdness that you can't find anywhere else.
7. Signed Adrian Tomine prints. I've had my eye on "Radio Sweetheart" for some time now.
8. Dusen Dusen towels. Or sheets. Or anything, really. Bright colors and bold patterns for the win.
9. Art by VHS GIRL. Her paintings on VHS-sized wood blocks make me laugh. Here's STOP MAKING SENSE! And here's TRON!
10. Tito's vodka. Baby, I don't wanna live in a world without Moscow Mules.
11. An Epic! gift subscription. This site is the "Netflix of children's books" ... and it happens to have the book I released earlier this year, WE MAKE COMICS.
12. Membership to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Support comics and free speech in one fell swoop. The current membership card/T-shirt were designed by our longtime pal Jeffrey Brown.
13. Time. I don't care if it's time to work, time to sleep, time to spend with the people I love ... I just never seem to have enough of it.
*Except dreams, that is. I keep those alive!
WHAT YOU'RE INTO:
A few things you're digging right now:
- Josh B. *loved* SAY SOMETHING BUNNY, a stage show/performance art piece that sounds right up my alley. Here's the trailer.
- Paul W. saw a remastered version of INXS' concert film LIVE BABY LIVE on the big screen. (The New York Times ran a story recently about the band's legacy.) Paul also sent a link to this video of Courtney Barnett playing the album KICK from start to finish.
- Michael F. recommends the YouTube series DRAW OFF, where animators and cartoonists draw against each other.
- Chris M. is into the SAVAGE AVENGERS comics; the first trade came out a few weeks ago.
- Scott W. recommends Terry Moore's FIVE YEARS: "It's this massive crossover involving every book he's done since Strangers in Paradise ended. ... Just on its own, it's a good series about trying to stop the end of the world," he says.
- And Herman tells us there's a new song from Hoodoo Gurus, who are going on a long-awaited tour.
